SASI stars set for track national challenge

Despite a tough lead up to the coming 2019 Track Cycling National Championship in Brisbane, South Australian athletes are ready to give the nationals their best shot

SOUTH Australian athletes are determined to put on their best show at the 2019 Track Cycling National Championship in Brisbane while the multi-million dollar upgrade of the Super-drome is under way.

The elite and under-19 nationals will be held at Anna Meares Velodrome between April 3 and 6, while the junior nationals, will be at the same venue between March 28 and 31.

After a hectic recent world championship in Poland, SA will be missing topliners Stephanie Morton and Matthew Glaetzer who is competing in Japan for the next three months.

Glaetzer, in particular, will provide some relief for opposition teams as he has taken out the sprint crown at four of the past five nationals, while SA has dominated the teams' competition in recent years.

While the senior athletes will be still aiming for their best there will be more focus on juniors doing well with the goal of competing at the junior world titles as the driving force.

SA and SASI Cycling Head Coach Brett Aitken said it would be a good test for the team.

"It's a chance again for our team to show how they are going although it will be harder this time without having had a training venue for at least six weeks with the upgrade of our velodrome," Aitken said.

"We will have a fairly full team from SASI although we will be missing Steph (Morton) and Matt (Glaetzer) who won't be competing.

"There will be more emphasis on the juniors doing well with the world titles to aim for.

"Not being able to train on our track at the moment has made it tougher and will be a bit of a challenge.''

Cycling Australia Podium Potential Academy squad members Thomas Clarke, Holly Takos, Maeve Plouffe and James Brister will be among the SA athletes looking for a strong competition.

The junior track world cycling championship will be held in Frankfurt, Germany, between August 14 and 18.
