DAY 8 - Highlights of all the SA athletes in Rio

Events and results for Day 8 of the Rio Olympics.

Basketball – Women

Australia (Cayla George, Laura Hodge, Erin Phillips, Stephanie Talbot) had another come from behind win in their final game of group play against Belarus to win 74-66. The win sets up a Quarter –final clash with Serbia.

Cycling – Track

Anna Meares won her first medal in the 2016 Olympic Games with a Bronze in the Women’s Keirin. Stephanie Morton was eliminated early in the event after finishing 2nd in the First round repechage.

Matthew Glaetzer has qualified for the Bronze Medal ride in the Men’s Sprint while Patrick Constable finished with an impressive 8th placing in his first Olympic Games.

Women’s Team Pursuit (Annette Edmondson) battled in the First round against Great Britain missing out on the medal rounds, They finished the event with a 5th placing.

Hockey

Hockeyroos (Jane Claxton. Karri McMahon, Georgie Parker, Gabi Nance) have defeated Japan 2-0 in the final match of Group stage. They progress to the Quarter-finals.

Shooting

David Chapman finished 26th in Stage 2 of the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event and has not progressed through to the final round.

Trampoline

Australia’s only trampoline representative, Blake Gaudry, narrowly missed a top eight qualifying place. Blake was in 5th position after the compulsory routine but had to re-start this second routine finished the qualifying round in 13th position.

Water Polo

The Women’s Water Polo team (Isobel Bishop) powered home with a convincing win over host nation Brazil in their final group game to finish 2nd in Group A. They progress to the Quarter-finals where they will face Hungary on Tuesday morning (local time).

Athletics – Kurtis Marschall starts his campaign in the Men’s Pole Vault from 8:50am and Henry Frayne will contest the Long Jump final from 9:20am.

Badminton - Leanne Choo has a tough battle with the last game group play against Thailand from 9:30am today. A must win to have any chance of progressing to the next round.

Swimming - Kyle Chalmers will anchor the Men’s 4 x 100m Medley relay Final at approximately 11:30am today looking for his 3rd medal of the games.

Beach Volleyball - Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy will play Poland in the Round of 16 at 11:30am. They are in the elimination phase of the competition and must win to progress to the quarter-final.
