Rowing National Championships were a success for SASI athletes

SASI's junior athletes step up at the Australian Rowing Championships with the team taking home a total of 11 medals.

The National Rowing Championships were held in Penrith, New South Wales between the 14 - 20 March 2016. The event was of significant importance to our underage athletes with results dictating their invitation to the next stage of Australian team selection. For the senior A athletes who have already been selected in the National team, this event was an opportunity to gain valuable race experience in their boat combinations.

The Senior A representatives included; Alex Hill (men's sweep), James McRae (men's quad), Sasha Belonogoff (men's quad), Sally Kehoe (women's double), Olympia Aldersy (women's sweep squad) and Molly Goodman (women's sweep squad). All of these experienced athletes raced well and together they accumulated 3 gold medals and 3 silver medals during the event.

The underage athletes who raced at the NSW State Championships four weeks prior were looking to improve on their positions amongst the competition to gain the attention of the national selectors.

The highlights included Verayna Zilm claimed bronze in the under 21 lightweight category even though she is still eligible for the under 19 category.

Bridget Badenoch placed 6th in an extremely tough field in the under 23 women's single. This is Bridget's first year out of the under 19 age category, and while she could have raced in the U21's she raced in the higher age category to expose her to a higher level of competition.

But one of the stand out performances for the SASI athletes was by Tim Santin and Kane Grant in the under 21 men's pair (photo). This combination were unable to progress to the A final at New South Wales State Championships however through hard work and technical changes they stepped it up at the National Championships and claimed bronze.

The underage squad returned home with 5 medals including 1 gold and 4 silver as well as gaining valuable knowledge and racing experience.

Rowing Australia will be announcing the underage selection list shortly with the selection regatta being held in Penrith, 6-10 April.
