SASI's young cyclists virtually set to tackle National Road Series

The coronavirus pandemic has halted sporting competitions around the world. But elite young cyclists from around Australia have found a way around that by competing in a National Road Series (NRS) on an online cycling platform.

IT won't be quite the same but a handful of promising young athletes will at least have some competition to look forward to during the next three months as they wait for the coronavirus pandemic to ease.

SASI athletes will take part in the National Road Series but in the comfort of mainly their homes in an online cycling platform called Zwift.

Used mainly for training in cycling the program will feature six events beginning on Saturday, May 2 and finishing in July.

Among the SA endurance athletes who will line up in the series include Chloe Moran, Katarina Chung-Orr, Ella Sibley, former triathlete Amber Pate, newcomer Ally Anderson and Tess Wight. The men's team is will comprise of Josh Harrison, Luke Wight, Angus Miller and Elliott Murada.

SASI Cycling Head Coach Brett Aitken said the series would be a good way of keeping athletes training and occupied.

"It will be interesting racing on a virtual platform," Aitken said.

"The races will be quite short where the athletes will feel very much that they are part of a race.

"Our women's team looks quite well suited and should adapt to the different conditions. We will get together remotely and discuss tactics and our plan of attack.''

Because of the pandemic restrictions no outdoor NRS events can be held until September 2020.

Six races will feature on varying courses with six-rider men’s and women’s teams to battle with their on-road rivals.

Each round will also be live-streamed across Zwift and the NRS Facebook page and will feature live commentary and special guests.

Race dates on Saturdays at 9:30am are May 2, May 16, May 30, June 13, June 27 and July 11.
