History made as SA's Hill claims back-to-back President's Cups
Champion athlete Alex Hill stood tall at the recent Sydney International Rowing Regatta to become the first South Australian to win the prestigious President's Cup twice - and back-to-back as well
SASI and national team athlete Alex Hill is quickly getting used to success at national and international level at rowing regattas around the world.
But his recent achievement in the President's Cup at the Sydney International Rowing Regatta, giving him back-to-backs in the Cup, saw him grab a slice of history as the only South Australian to win more than one Cup in its 151 years.
With the national events earlier in the week, the final day saw the interstate challenge where Hill 26, took out the open's men's single scull. He also won a sculls' event at the national level a few days earlier and also took out the same events in 2018.
Hill wasn't aware, at the time, of his historic achievement.
"I had no idea about that but it is a big thrill to win that event and back up with the national title," Hill said.
"To win the double last year and back up again this year was pretty thrilling.
"I was reasonably confident going into the interstate challenge as I had raced and beaten the field before in the nationals. It was a case of getting through the heats and semis unscathed.''
SASI Head Coach Rowing Jason Lane said Hill's efforts were excellent.
"It just shows the calibre of athlete he is," Lane said,
"To be the first South Aussie to achieve that feat was terrific. He has been used to pairs and fours events so this result was great.''
Hill also teamed with James McRae, Angus Dawson and Nathan Bowden to win bronze in the fours on the Friday.
McRae (2011), Brenton Terrell (1988) and Norm Talbot (1971) are the South Aussies to have won the President's Cup.
For now Hill is back to training at the National Training Centre in Canberra before preparing for World Cup 2 in Poznan, Poland, between June 21 and 23 and World Cup 3 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, between July 12 and 14.
