Spotlight brightens as Paige set to hit world stage

A new state and a high-performance program with SASI looks to be the perfect fit for rising star Paige Greco - celebrating making her first Australian team which will compete at the 2019 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championship in the Netherlands between March 14 and 17, 2019

HEARING the announcer sing her praises as a young star representing South Australia at the recent road national cycling championships in Buninyong near Ballarat took a bit of getting used, says new SASI athlete Paige Greco.

Paige, 21, won two green and gold jerseys at the road nationals to make it four national titles in the past month on the road and track, as a South Aussie.

But in mid June last year Paige decided to leave her home state Victoria to relocate to South Australia to work under the SASI cycling program and to progess her university studies at Uni SA (exercise and sports science), a move she says has been a winner.

"I had worked with Loz (Shaw) before and wanted to work with him again and develop my cycling," Paige said.

"It has been really good but it was really strange hearing the announcer call my name as representing South Australia.

"Making my first national team is exciting. Hopefully I can do a PB but I will just do the best I can.

"I would love to make Tokyo in 2020 but I am just aiming to have a big year and see what happens from there."

Paige, who lives in Warradale, has cerebral palsy which mainly affects the right side of her body.

Until a few years ago she was a promising track and field athlete but gave that up to concentrate fully on cycling.

She has strong family ties and tries to get home as often as her program allows.

Paige will join her SASI teammates Meg Lemon, Darren Hicks, Darcy Thompson and Brad Henderson and the rest of the 17-strong national team at a training camp in Brisbane later in January before heading to the world titles in mid March.
