SASI Hockeyroos looking for another gold rush
A revamped Hockeyroos team will look to defend its gold medal from the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games when the Gold Coast edition begins on April 4
JANE Claxton, Gabi Nance and Karri McMahon will be striving to keep Australia on top of the podium when the Hockeyroos compete at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games from April 4.
The SASI scholarship holders were selected in an 18-person Australian team after strong performances in lead up tournaments.
Claxton, 25, and McMahon, 26, were members of the Hockeyroos' gold-medal team in Glasgow, while Nance, 23, will make her Commonwealth Games debut.
Claxton, based in Perth at the national training centre, said the team was looking solid.
''I'm personally tracking well, I have been injury free so that has been beneficial for my prep leading in,'' Claxton said.
''The team is looking fit and robust, less injuries overall in the last few months which is a positive considering earlier this year and late last year we had a lot on our injury list.
''The girls are excited but nervous. Many have not attended a multi sport event so that comes with both challenges and positives for the team to overcome.
''Not many of our opponents have played our current line up so we have the element of surprise but also our lack of exposure to other international teams is something we will have to consider leading into many games.
''Overall there is a very positive vibe amongst the girls.
''We have a lot of young, fast talent. It is just a matter of creating consistency among those players.''
The Hockeyroos, which are in Group B, play Canada on April 4, Ghana on April 7, New Zealand on April 9 and Scotland on April 10 before semi finals, if they progress.
