SASI divers ready to fire at Commonwealth Games selection trials
FINETUNING is well under way as South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) athletes aim to qualify for the Commonwealth Games at this week’s selection trials on the Gold Coast.
Six SASI athletes, Matthew Carter, Brodie Scapens, Kate Rosman, Lily Foster, Taneka Kovchenko and Matthew Barnard, who had been training in the US, will be vying for selection on the Australian team.
The trials are held on the Gold Coast between Thursday, December 14, and Sunday, December 17.
SASI Diving Coach Aurelie Gibson said the South Australian divers trained well on the opening day.
‘’The first training session went well,’’ she said.
‘’It was sunny and windy so it’s challenging for all of the participants. SASI divers are training well in the environment.’’
The SASI schedule for the trials is:
Matthew Carter: Men’s 1m, Men’s 3m, Men’s 3m Synchro
Brodie Scapens: Men’s Platform; Men’s Platform Synchro
Kate Rosman: Women’s 1m; Women’s 3m; Women’s 3m Synchro
Taneka Kovchenko: Women’s Platform
Matthew Barnard; Men’s Platform
Kovchenko was nominated for the 10m Synchro with Melissa Wu but Wu had to pull out of the trials due to injury.
Larouche said Carter, Scapens and Kovchenko appeared to be the strongest chances of making the team but would not rule out the less experienced athletes giving Games selection a big shake.
The team for the Commonwealth Games in April next year is expected to be announced soon after the trials have finished.
