Budding star Nyah a Rookie to be reckoned with

A whirlwind season continued for rising star Nyah Allen when she won the Nine News Netball Cup Rookie of the Year award at last week's netball presentation night

IT'S fair to say this week is a little out of the ordinary for star young netballer Nyah Allen.

Nyah, 15, and a Year 9 student at Immanuel College, capped off an outstanding season as a member of Garville's Premier Division team by winning the Nine News Netball Cup Rookie of the Year Award.

On top of that the SASI scholarship holder combined with champion Carla Boreggo in the goal circle to help her side to a nailbiting victory against Oakdale, 59-57, in the first semi final the day before.

That win set up a blockbuster preliminary final against old foe Contax this Friday (August 25, 8.30pm) at Priceline Stadium. If Garville wins it will meet Matrics in the Grand Final the following week.

SASI Netball Coach Jenny Borlase said it was a fantastic achievement by Nyah.

''She is a really exciting prospect,'' Borlase said.

''She plays with a lot of poise beyound her years and is difficult to fluster.

''At senior level she is up against much bigger bodies and rarely deviate from her focus on the ball. Her shooting percentage in the Premier League this season has been 91 per cent.

''And to have someone like Carla Boreggo to play alongside is great for her development as a young athlete.

''Moving forward she will be looking to build up her strength and manage her daily training environment."

Nyah, from Mount Gambier, was a member of the Millicent netball team which won its eighth straight senior grand final last season, Nyah adjudged best on court.

Last year she was a member of the victorious SA Under-17 state team and is pushing for selection again this season.

With the national championships in Adelaide in April next season Nyah will be also vying to win a berth in the Under-17 national squad.
