SA coaches net top tips from master mentor
Australian Netball Hall of Fame member Jill McIntosh was in Adelaide in mid August to oversee coaching sessions with SASI netballers and coaches
SASI netballers and coaches from Premier League and other clubs were bolstered with information and ideas when renowned coach and former player Jill McIntosh visited Adelaide last week.
McIntosh coached Australia between 1995 and 2003 with two world titles and two Commonwealth Games gold medals behind her after a playing career which spanned 29 Tests.
McIntosh, Netball Australia Centre of Excellence Head Coach, travels around Australia helping various programs with playing drills and assists the development of coaches at different levels.
In mid August she ran a program involving defensive and attacking skills with most of the SASI netball squad while coaches of various clubs looked on.
Netball SA/Adelaide Thunderbirds High Performance Strength and Conditioning Coach Todd Andrews demonstrated a high-performance warm up with the SASI squad.
On Wednesday and Friday McIntosh touched base with coaches to update their coaching and information about their craft.
McIntosh said the progress of netball and development of coaches in Australia was important.
''It is all about giving the coaches opportunities to learn and to grow,'' she said. ''And a good thing about netball is that there are so many players at different levels. There is something for everyone and a lot of pathways for girls.''
McIntosh also will touch base with SASI Netball Head Coach Jenny Borlase who took on the job in April this year.
Borlase said she enjoyed the sessions.
"I am loving the job and the program and am very much in the learning phase,'' she said.
''Jill showed the coaches how to build drills up and was working with a mix of Premier League clubs and elite coaches which was part of their professional development.''
In terms of competition, the Premier League finals will begin soon while juniors involved in nationals squads can look forward to training camps in September (Under17) and in December (Under 19) at the Netball Australia Centre of Excellence in Canberra.
