DAY 10 - Highlights of all the SA athletes in Rio

Events and results for Day 10 of the Rio Olympics.

Cycling – Track

Anna Meares finished her Rio campaign overnight with a 10th in the Women’s Sprint. Her overall tally for the games is a Bronze Medal in the Keirin, 4th in the Team Sprint and 10th in the Sprint.

Glenn O’Shea started the second half of the Omnium sitting in 7th position. With a 2nd in the Time Trial and 6th in the Flying Lap he was on the edge of winning a medal. Unfortunately he didn’t score in the Points Race and finished the event in 7th position.

Annette Edmondson is also placed 7th halfway through the Women’s Omnium. With only 18 points the difference to a medal position at this stage.


Grant Nel entered competition in the Preliminary round of the 3m Springboard competition finishing in 17th.  He has progressed to the Semi-final where he will battle to finish in the top 12 to qualify for the Final.


The Hockeyroos (Jane Claxton, Karri McMahon, Gabi Nance, Georgie Parker) were defeated by New Zealand in the quarter-finals 2-4 and have been eliminated from the tournament.

Water Polo

The Aussie Stingers (Isobel Bishop) had a heartbreaking loss to Hungary in the Quarter-finals in a penalty shoot-out. The score was tied at 8-8 after full-time but two misses from the Aussies left them with an 11-13 final result.
