DAY 5 - Highlights of all the SA athletes in Rio
Events and results for Day 5 of the Rio Olympics.
Men’s Basketball
The Aussie Boomers Men’s Basketball Team featuring South Australia’s Joe Ingles, faced the star studded line up from the USA in a top of Group A clash. It was a tight battle with the Boomers leading 54-69 at half time. The US team fought back in the second half outscoring the Boomers 98-88 at full-time.
Beach Volleyball
Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy continued their hot form by defeating the 6 seeded Dutch team Meppelink/Van Iersel 2:1 to finish top of Pool F and move directly to the Round of 16. Our second Women’s team of Mariafe Artacho Del Solar and Nikki Laird faced a tough match with the team from China in Pool C. They needed to win the match to have a chance to progress to the next phase and unfortunately weren’t able to push the Chinese pair and have now been eliminated from the tournament.
Cycling
SASI Cyclist Rohan Dennis was back in action on the Road, this time in his top event the Time Trial. Rohan led the competition at the first 2 checkpoints but moved back in the field with the stronger riders following him. Despite a setback when his handlebar snapped forcing him to change bikes inside the last 10km, Dennis finished in 5th position just over one minute behind the eventual winner Fabian Cancellara.
Women’s Hockey
After a slow start to the tournament the Hockeyroos (Jane Claxton, Karri McMahon, Gabi Nance, Georgie Parker) came out fighting against India for a much needed win. They were dominant from the start of the match. Consecutive goals in the 3rd quarter from Jane Claxton and Georgie Parker 1 minute apart helped the Hockeyroos push further ahead eventuating in a 6-1 win for Australia.
Rowing
The Rowing competition was again delayed due to poor weather which resulted in closure of the Rowing course. The boats will hit the water again on Thursday Rio time.
Up Next
Still to come on Day 5 (11:30 am local time) is our young swimming superstar Kyle Chalmers in the Men’s 100 m Freestyle final. Kyle has shown exceptional maturity and will be a strong medal favourite after winning his Semi-final and qualifying 2nd fastest for the final.
