National Open Diving Championships and Olympic Trials Results

Nervous wait for SASI Divers after National Open titles and Olympic qualifiers.

At the conclusion of the Australian Diving National Open Championships that doubled as the Olympic Trials, there is now a nervous wait for our athletes as the selectors work through the selection criteria and finalise the nominations to the Australian Olympic Committee.

The event was surreal for some as the pressure cooker environment took its toll on experienced athletes and there were only a few national squad athletes who met all of the selection criteria.

South Australia had a strong team represented with a mix of senior and junior athletes and finished with the following podium results;

- Gold, Grant Nel (Men’s 3m Springboard)

- Silver, Samantha Mills (Women’s 3m Synchro)

- Silver, Taneka Kovchenko (Women’s Platform)

- Silver, Matthew Barnard (Men’s Platform)

- Bronze, Ross Todd (Men’s Platform)

- Silver, Matthew Carter (Men’s 1m)

Michel Larouche, National Head Coach and SASI Head Coach said “The South Australian divers shined at Open Nationals last weekend and many thanks to SASI, Diving SA, Diving Australia, parents of the divers and coaches, you all made it happen”.

Australia has qualified two divers in each of the individual events (men’s and women’s 3 metre springboard and Platform) and a women’s 3-metre synchro team for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
