Anthony Dean claims gold at first BMX event for 2021
South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) BMX cyclist Anthony Dean has kicked off the year with a big win!
The Rio Olympian won gold in the men’s superclass race at the BMX Summer Showdown on Sunday – part of the Santos Festival of Cycling.
Following a frustrating year of cancelled and postponed events due to COVID-19, Anthony was excited to get back out on the track in a competitive environment.
“It was great to race again and get the longer efforts in under race conditions,” Dean said.
“It was a bonus to get the win and put some extra motivation in the tank as we head towards July for Tokyo.”
Prior to the global pandemic, the BMX star was sitting in a prime position to head to Tokyo for the Games, given his result in the World Cup.
Olympic selection for the Australian BMX team is now once again front of mind for the 29-year-old, with qualifying events to be determined in the months to come.
Anthony is originally from South Australia and has spent the last eight years living in San Diego before returning home in March last year when the coronavirus hit.
The SASI Individual Athlete Program has supported Anthony since the beginning of his professional career with coaching staff, support facilities and financial help.
