Greco storms home to defend world pursuit in Milton
SASI athlete Paige Greco again raised the bar at the UCI Para-cycling Track World titles in Milton, Canada, defending her individual pursuit world title in a barnstorming finish.
RISING star of world para-cycling Paige Greco again showed her class and determination by defending her individual world pursuit title in Milton, Canada.
Greco, 22, produced her trademark finish at the UCI Para-cyling Track World titles to reel in leader Clara Brown (US) after trailing by about three seconds at half-way mark.
But the final 500m was all Greco as she powered home to snare a gold medal for Australia on the opening day, just two tenths of a second outside her world record time set in the Netherlands in 2019.
Greco said she was thrilled with her result after looking in some trouble.
"I was worried a little in the final when I was down a few seconds but thankfully had it in my legs to bring it home in the last two laps,'' Greco said.
"I'm very happy I was able to defend my title in the individual pursuit.''
Defending world champion Darren Hicks showed a lot of character to compete strongly to finish fourth in the 3000 pursuit after returning to competition after missing the recent road nationals because of injury.
Meg Lemon also had plenty of highlights with a silver in her individual pursuit categoy, while she finished seventh in the time trial.
Australia finished third on the overall table behind China and Great Britain. The team of eight athletes won eight gold, one silver and a bronze medal.
