Hicks shines on centre stage at Sports SA awards
Many of South Australia's leading athletes were recognised last Friday night at the South Australian Sports Star of the Year awards, SASI athlete Darren Hicks among the overall winners
SASI athlete Darren Hicks continues to chalk up the victories, last Friday night taking out the Elite Athlete with a Disability award at the SA Sports Awards dinner at Adelaide Oval.
More than 500 people attended the night as Hicks and other category winners and Hall of Fame inductees were presented.
For Hicks, the reigning individual pursuit world champion, it has been a rewarding year.
Recently selected in the Australian team to compete at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championship in Canada in January next year, Hicks said the award was a surprise.
"I really didn't think I'd win to be honest,'' Hicks said. "Michael (Roeger, one of the three finalists in that category) is a fantastic athlete and has had a great year so it was really nice to get the award.
"Being recognised by our institute and direct sporting body is one thing but winning an award that covers all sports across the state is just that little bit more special.''
With the awards night finishing just before midnight Hicks showed his dedication by hitting the road for training at 5.20am the next morning for a 135km ride.
