SASI stars lead charge at Para-cycling track worlds
Australia will send a strong team to the UCI Para-cycling Track World Cycling Championship in Canada early next year with three SASI athletes on the team
SOUTH Australian Sports Institute athletes will fly the flag for Australia when they compete in the national team at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Milton, Canada, between January 30 and February 2.
SASI has world champions Paige Greco and Darren Hicks in the eight-person team as well as world championship medallist Meg Lemon.
Australia enjoyed a stellar effort at the previous world titles with 17 medals, including nine world titles to finish second on the ladder overall. Six of the eight athletes on the national team headed to Canada have won world titles.
The world titles will pit the Australians against about 200 riders from 30 countries.
Greco, who has produced an amazing run of results since being involved in the sport, said she was thrilled with her selection and that of her teammates.
"I'm really excited to be on the team and to go to Canada will be great,'' Greco said.
"This will be my second world championship so it will be another great experience.''
But there is plenty on the calendar for Greco, Hicks and Lemon in the next 10 weeks.
The trio is expected to line up in mid-December in Brisbane for a round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup. From there they are expected to compete in the road nationals in early January in Ballarat and then a possibility of riding in the Tour Down Under in mid January.
While the world titles in Canada will play a big part in selection the team for Tokyo that may not happen until mid-way through next year.
