Volleyroos produce a Hamburg special
There's no stopping Volleyroos Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy who have continued their outstanding run - claiming a bronze medal at their debut FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship in Hamburg between June 28 and July 7.
HOW far exciting beach volleyball team Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy can go in their sport is the question after the duo's stunning bronze medal at the recent FIVB World Championships in Hamburg, Germany.
Backing up the pair's recent world cup gold medal, the team was up for the challenge by accounting for Swiss duo Tanja Huberli and Nina Betschart 2-0 in the playoff for bronze at the Rothenbaum Stadium.
The match was a nailbiter with the SASI-based pair winning the first set 21-18 and 22-20 in a gruelling second set.
Victory meant they were the first Australian women’s duo to win a world title medal in beach volleyball in 16 years when Nicole Sanderson and Natalie Cook claimed bronze in Rio.
Clancy was thrilled with the result to replicate the Aussie pair in 2003.
"It’s just incredible that we are bronze medalists just like them now. I’m so proud of where we are at and of our legacy,'' Clancy said.
Del Solar said the win was a top hit out for another big event - the Tokyo Olympic Games.
"This is such a huge event leading to the Olympics next year and it was so important for us,'' Del Solar said.
"It’s been an intense week, we’ve gone through so much adversity and I’m proud of us for staying together as a team. Playing in the stadium gives you goose bumps, the energy of the crowd was unbelievable and it has been so much fun.”
The Aussie duo went into the world championships ranked number two in the world with the new rankings expected to be revealed soon.
