Michael Roeger and Angus Hincksman are among the first athletes who have been selected for Australia’s Para-athletics Team at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

After spending the past five years focussing on the marathon, Roeger stepped back to his roots racing in the 1500m distance, after the T46 Marathon was removed from the upcoming Paralympics.

Despite this change up, it hasn’t stopped him from doing incredible things on the track, where he won a silver medal at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships, adding to his decade of success on the global stage.

The four-time Paralympian now hopes that Paris will be his best performance yet.

“I think a young Michael, looking back at his first one in Beijing 2008, would never have thought he’d be going to five games,” Roeger said.

“We've learned a lot over the last three years since the last games, going to Tokyo was tough. So, we've taken on those learnings, and for me now, less is more.

“I just have to remember that and be patient, just be happy and healthy and then I'm going to be hard to beat in Paris.”

As a veteran of the team, Roeger’s best advice to the newcomers is to be relaxed heading into the Games.

“Enjoy it, be proud to wear the green and gold because not many people get that opportunity and you never know when it’s going to be your last one, so take it all in.”

One of those team members will be Hincksman, who’s making his Paralympic debut in Paris.

The 18-year-old has announced himself as one to watch in the global Para-athletics ranks.

He executed a dream international debut performance at the World Para Athletics Championships last year, when he secured a bronze medal in the Men’s T38 1500m.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games athletics program will be held in France’s largest stadium, Stade de France, from 30 August to 8 September.
