Boxer Callum Peters is aiming to make history when he competes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) athlete has officially been selected to join the largest ever Australian Olympic boxing team and he has one goal in mind.

“Become the first Australian boxer to get gold – I believe in all the hard work I put in and what I’ve achieved so far,” Peters said.

The announcement comes after Peters earnt qualification for Paris at the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara where he won the Oceania qualifier.

In his debut Games, the 21-year-old will be part of a 12-strong team, eclipsing London 2012 (11 athletes).

Peters joins his teammate Marissa Williamson Pohlman as the first Indigenous athletes selected for the Australian Olympic Team for Paris.

“I’m very excited… it still hasn’t really hit me yet,” Peters said.

“I reckon once I get on that plane a lot of emotion will probably hit me.”

As he prepares to take to the ring in the men’s 80kg event, the Davoren Park local is adding plenty of variety to his training regime where sparring, strength and conditioning, running, and swimming all fill up his weekly schedule.

It’s part of a fitness plan that has been devised by SASI and Peters’ coach/Dad, Bradley Peters who has been working with his son for the past 12 years to get him to this point in his career.

Spending every day with him and seeing his progress, (Bradley) Peters is confident in his son’s abilities to reach the top of the podium.

“He’s an Olympian now and that’s the hardest thing to do in your boxing career, to go to that level in life and in sports and from here I’m hoping he can go to that next level and get that gold,” (Bradley) Peters said.

“If he can do it for himself and for South Australia, he will have done so well for all of us.”
